The east area of Montevideo has become as one of the most Westernized areas of the country, with many beaches, a wide range of water activities and a good number of tourists wearing Hawaiian shirts. Close of the capital we can visit the main tourist center of Atlántida.
Some kilometers away from Atlantida we can find Piriapolis, where you can climb to the Sugar Loaf Mountain (493 m) or you can visit Minas, a beautiful city situated between forested hills.
But the largest and most famous beach resort is Punta del Este, one of the finest South American destinations with great charming. The town is full of yachts, fishing clubs, golf courses, casinos and beautiful residences.
The beaches are excellent, perfect for a dip and sunbathe. Off the coast are Gorriti island with magnificent beaches and the remains of an eighteenth-century fortress, and Isla de Lobos, a nature reserve that home to a large colony of sea lions.
