Caracas officially Santiago de León de Caracas, is the capital and largest city of Venezuela; natives or residents are known as Caraquenians in English (and Caraqueños in Spanish). Despite these obvious attractions, Caracas’ grittier side predominates. Traffic is relentless, and trash and noise can be unnerving. Haphazardly built shantytowns creep up the surrounding hillsides, and poor enclaves rub shoulders with some of the ritziest zones. It is located in the northern part of the country, following the contours of the narrow Caracas Valley on the Venezuelan coastal mountain range (Cordillera de la Costa). The valley’s temperatures are springlike. Terrain suitable for building lies between 760 and 910 m (2,493.44 and 2,985.56 ft) above sea level. The valley is close to the Caribbean Sea, separated from the coast by a steep 2200 m (7400 ft) high mountain range, Cerro Ávila; to the south there are more hills and mountains. Caracas has a tropical climate, tempered by its relatively high altitude position and proximity to the sea. Temperatures are comfortably warm and vary little year round.

The rainy season extends from June to December. Spreading along a high plateau that’s partitioned from the sea by towering green mountains, Venezuela’s capital presents a dense urban fabric, with scores of skyscrapers sticking out of a mass of low-rise buildings like bars on a graph. Fast-paced and cosmopolitan, this progressive city nevertheless has over four centuries of history buried beneath its glass-and-concrete monuments to oil-fueled affluence, while signs of corrosion mar its patina of modernism.
Venezuela’s capital and largest city is the center of commerce, culture, economics and the base for touring the country’s attractions.

Caracas blends a modern cityscape and a colonial heritage with a lush, temperate climate. It’s noisy as any large city with millions of inhabitants, yet it boasts a city park with a waterfall and hundreds of tropical plants. Many people pass through Caracas, Venezuela on their way to other destinations, such as Angel Falls, Margarita Island or Los Roques. However, the sprawling city, a mix of modern highrises and development as well as a colonial and historic center around the Plaza Bolivar is well worth adding a day or two to your itinerary.
